A mid-air collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on January 29 resulted in a fatal accident involving an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army helicopter, with all 67 persons on board presumed deceased.

Pope Francis extended his spiritual support in a telegram to President Donald Trump, expressing sympathy for families.

His telegram read:

“In commending the souls of the deceased to the loving mercy of Almighty God, I offer my deepest sympathies to the families who are now mourning the loss of a loved one. I likewise pray for those involved in the recovery efforts and invoke upon all in the nation the divine blessings of consolation and strength.”

Catholic leaders around the US offered their prayers as well.

Bishop Michael Burbidge of Arlington urged, “may we be united in prayer for all those tragically impacted by the accident near Reagan Airport,” while Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore also expressed condolences. Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington said that Catholics in the Archdiocese of Washington are praying for the victims and families.

The jet, carrying 60 passengers and four crew, was landing when it collided with a military helicopter carrying three soldiers. Wreckage fell into the Potomac River.

Rescue teams have recovered several bodies from the river, and officials confirm that no survivors are expected. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the collision.

Local authorities and recovery crews continue their work as officials await findings from ongoing investigations.
