In a meeting with Vatican-accredited journalists, Pope Francis extolled the virtues of responsible journalism and underscored the importance of reporting with integrity.

Addressing the International Association of Journalists Accredited to the Vatican (AIGAV), the Pope likened journalists to doctors, saying, “In a certain sense, the journalist does likewise, choosing to touch personally the wounds of society and the world.”

During this first-of-its-kind gathering in his 11-year papacy, Pope Francis praised the dedication and sacrifices of the Vatican press corps. He emphasized the significance of their role in portraying the Church beyond superficial stereotypes and ideological narratives. “You are a community united by a mission,” he said, acknowledging the challenges and passion that accompany their profession.

Pope Francis highlighted the delicate balance journalists must maintain while covering sensitive topics like Church scandals. He expressed his gratitude for their respectful approach, saying, “Many times I have seen in you a great delicacy, a respect, an almost ‘abashed’ silence: Thank you for this attitude.”

He further encouraged the journalists to anchor their work in truth and responsibility, steering clear of sensationalism and ideological distortion. “The beauty of your work is that of grounding itself on the solid rock of responsibility to the truth, not on the fragile sand of gossip and of ideological interpretations,” he said.

The Pope’s dialogue with the press comes just ahead of the feast of St. Francis de Sales on Jan 24, the patron saint of journalists, showing a bridge of understanding and respect between the Vatican and the media.

As the meeting concluded, Pope Francis not only thanked the journalists for their unwavering commitment but also sought their prayers, acknowledging their integral role in disseminating the truth and essence of the Church to the world.
