Pope Francis cautioned against the mental harm caused by excessive phone use during his address at the Jubilee of Communicators on January 25, 2025.
Speaking to thousands of media professionals gathered in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, Pope Francis stressed the risks of constant scrolling on social media. He linked the phenomenon to the term “brain rot,” noting its recent recognition as a cultural concern.
Pope Francis called on young people to break free from the habit of endless scrolling, which he said contributes to a decline in critical thinking and personal reflection. He emphasized the need for education to combat this problem, urging a focus on media literacy and thoughtful engagement with information.
“The choices of each of us count in expelling that ‘brain rot’ caused by the addiction to continuous scrolling on social media,” said Pope Francis reported ANSA, adding that communication should promote growth rather than distraction.
Addressing media professionals, he urged them to create content that uplifts, rather than contributes to this problem. He called for journalists and storytellers to focus on building bridges and fostering understanding, warning that unchecked digital habits could further harm social cohesion.
Pray with Pope Francis against brain rot!
