The Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano has commented on President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, comparing it to Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation.

Alessandro Gisotti, Vatican Media’s editorial director, called the decision “a noble choice.”

Gisotti reflected on Biden’s move in a signed column, explaining the challenges of stepping down from a position of power. He wrote, “whenever a prominent public figure chooses to step back … he or she immediately captures public sympathy and esteem.” This was evident after Biden announced he would not seek re-election, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his preferred successor.

The column also draws parallels to Benedict XVI’s resignation, highlighting the humility involved in these decisions. Gisotti noted that both leaders devoted their lives to service, achieving significant milestones before choosing to step aside. He expressed hope that Biden would use his remaining months to pursue bold initiatives, particularly in foreign policy.

Biden’s decision, announced on social media, was described by Gisotti as putting the country’s needs above personal ambitions, much like Benedict’s resignation, which was driven by his recognition of his own limitations.
