The Vatican has announced an apostolic visitation of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP), a society of apostolic life of pontifical right known for celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass.

The announcement was made by the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, with the goal of “understanding” the society and providing appropriate support.

The Fraternity’s leadership issued a statement on September 26, clarifying that the visit was not prompted by internal issues. “This visit does not originate in any problems of the Fraternity,” but is meant to “provide us with any help we may need.

Founded in 1988, the FSSP remains in full communion with the Holy See. Their mission is to promote the “formation and sanctification of priests” through the Traditional Latin Mass, which has seen restrictions under Pope Francis.

The last apostolic visitation of the FSSP occurred in 2014. This visitation is expected to take place within the next year.
