Indulgences are often misunderstood. In the next few vlogs we want to answer some common objections and show that they are in fact an act of charity and mercy offered by the Church. Today we look at their biblical basis.

    • A marriage in the Roman Catholic Church is a marriage not just between the man and the woman, but also with Jesus Christ. This is done throught the sacrament of Matrimony. Any cohabitation or sexual relationship outside the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is a sin of fornication (if the individuals are free to marry) or adultery (if either one has already recieved the sacrament of Holy Matrimony with another individual). Having said all of this, the answer is NO. Individuals married in civil ceremonies could not receive the Holy Eucharist. Continuous sexual relationship that is done out of freedom of choice to sin could mean that the inbdividuals chose to excommunicate themselves with Mother Church.

I was once married civilly to a divorced man (I was not aware of the situation). I was told by many people in the church that I could receive the Holy Eucharist because God knows what is in my heart.

Thank God for fearless Holy Priests in the Church. They told me that I should not be receiving the Holy Eucharist because I am in continuous state of Mortal Sin. To receive the Holy Eucharist in susch state is a sacrilege. I was very angry at first, but I decided to be a faithful Catholic.

My husband went through the annulment process without gurantees that his marriage will be annulled (there is no diovorce in the Catholic Church). Annulment is a process of reviewing the condition of the failed marriage to see if there was a defect prior to the wedding (very complicated process). I went to Holy Mass for two year without skipping it, but did not receive the Holy Eucharist.

My husband and I was blessed to have been able to marry in the Church after the annulment of his previous defective marriage.

We need to be faithful to the Church. We can not just be Catholic when it is convinient.

  1. No they can’t because even though they legally married, since it hasn’t been blessed, in the eyes of God they still living in sin

  2. Actually, in theory the couple might be able to take Holy Communion – provided they confess and manage to not to have sexual contact. In practice, this arrangement would be very difficult to maintain.

    • The cohabitation of two individuals who are not married in the Catholic Church is considered as a scandal that lead other people to sin (e.g., gossip, people immitating their example, etc.). Individuals in this situation should not be approaching the Sacrament of Confession unless they have resolved to live separately.

Staying in the same household is an occassion of sin that creates tension as to to chose good or bad at all times. Sex is something that caused many men (or women) to fall into sin of lust.
