Pope Francis is set to make history by attending the G7 summit in Puglia, Italy, from June 13-15, marking the first time a pope has participated in the meetings of this global economic forum.

At the summit, he will engage in discussions particularly focused on the challenges and ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence (AI).

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who extended the invitation to Pope Francis, explained the significance of his attendance:

“I am convinced that the presence of His Holiness will make a decisive contribution to defining a regulatory, ethical, and cultural framework for artificial intelligence,” Meloni said.

This session is part of Italy’s broader goal to establish guidelines for AI usage, which includes their recent legislation aimed at regulating AI and ensuring it remains human-centered.

Pope Francis also has been vocal about the need for ethical governance of AI in the past.

In December calling for an international treaty to ensure that AI development does not compromise human values.
