Given to us by the Virgin Mary herself, the brown scapular is a powerful sacramental and symbol of devotion. But is it a “get out of hell free” card?

The brown scapular has its origins in the city of Aylesford in England, when Saint Simon Stock was a prior of the Carmelite Order living there. On the 16th of July in 1251, the feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Virgin Mary appeared to him in a vision.

She handed him a brown woolen scapular, with a promise of divine protection from the “eternal fire” for his order, saying:

“This shall be a privilege for you and all Carmelites. Whoever dies invested with this Scapular shall be preserved from the eternal flames. It is a sign of salvation, a sure safeguard in danger, a pledge of peace and of my special protection until the end of the ages.”

After a vision from Our Lady, Pope John XXII extended that promise to wearers of the brown scapular, the Sabbatine Privilege, to all of the Faithful in his papal bull Sacratissimo Uti Culmine of 1322.

“I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in purgatory I shall free so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting.”

Our Lady of Mount Carmel promised that anyone who died “invested” in the devotional habit would be saved from Hell, and to bring one in purgatory to Heaven on the Saturday after their death. Does this make wearing the brown scapular a “get out of hell free” card? Not exactly…

Simply wearing the brown scapular is not enough: it should serve as an exterior sign of interior fidelity. The brown scapular is a sign of your consecration and dedication to Our Lady, a choice to live for Christ through Mary’s help. A silent prayer, it serves as a daily reminder to clothe yourself, literally and figuratively, in the virtues of the Faith.

To receive Our Lady’s promise, a Catholic priest first has to “vest” you in the brown scapular after which you certain conditions must be filled: wearing it continuously, observing chastity if not married, and saying five decades of the Rosary daily.
