Father Felice Palamara, a vocal opponent of organized crime in Southern Italy, narrowly escaped harm recently during a Mass in Cessaniti, Calabria.

An unidentified individual attempted to poison the priest by adding bleach to the chalice used for communion. This alarming incident, which took place on February 24, was quickly detected by Father Palamara due to the unusual smell emanating from the liturgical vessel, prompting an immediate pause to Mass and subsequent police investigation.

The diocese of Mileto-Nicotera-Tropea, led by Bishop Attilio Nostro, has publicly denounced these acts of violence and intimidation, urging the Catholic community to stand firm against the language of violence. “We must not respond to hatred with hatred,” the bishop said, praying for resilience and peace in the face of adversity.

Father Palamara’s consistent denunciations of the mafia’s influence have not only made him a target of intimidation but have also led to previous acts of vandalism against his property and threats to his life.

The attempted poisoning is said to be part of a broader pattern of intimidation against those in the region who work to promote the rule of law and challenge the mafia’s stronghold.

Other clergy members and local activists have also faced threats, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and support from both law enforcement and the community to uphold justice and reject the fear that organized crime seeks to instill.

“I feel calm,” Father Palamara said, saying his faith in both God and judicial protection against the forces of darkness that threaten their way of life is unwavering.
