I heard recently that fasting is a luxury of the rich, since most of the world’s Catholics have a type of perpetual fasting forced upon them, through poverty or persecution. A monumental thought for those of us hovering between both realities. My monthly income is far beneath a standard poverty level in Canada, but small donations to places like SW India, go further to help priests care for those most in need, be they Christian or not. With 35 million people in Canada, 38% are baptized Catholics. If there are 20 million Catholics in India which represents only 2%, that is a staggering statistic. I pray for those affected by annual floods, that fundraising appeals by bishops and others for August 2018 to the present. Diocesan efforts do not come anywhere close to goals set. With additional flood damage in 2019 and 2020, I pray for and donate what I can, when I can, encouraging others to do the same. Amen.
