Richard Dawkins, known for his atheism and authorship of “The God Delusion,” during an interview with LBC, declared himself a “cultural Christian.”

Despite rejecting the core beliefs of Christianity, Dawkins expressed a preference for its cultural traditions over those of Islam, especially with the UK’s changing religious demographics. “I call myself a cultural Christian,” Dawkins said.

In the interview, Dawkins voiced his disquiet about the increasing number of mosques being built in England and the celebration of Islamic holidays, such as Ramadan, over traditional Christian ones. He explained his reaction to seeing Ramadan lights on Oxford Street during Easter, saying, “I was slightly horrified to hear that Ramadan is being promoted instead.”

Dawkins also discussed his view of Christianity and Islam, asserting his preference for the former. “If I had to choose between Christianity and Islam, I choose Christianity every single time,” he said. His criticism extended to the doctrines of Islam, particularly regarding their stance on women and LGBTQ+ rights.

Dawkins, discussing the broader implications of religious influence in the UK, reiterated his stance towards Christianity’s cultural legacy. He emphasized, “I like to live in a culturally Christian country, although I do not believe a single word of the Christian faith.”
