In a world grappling with an ever-increasing mental health crisis, the Church is seeking to address this great challenge of our time.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Catholic Mental Health Campaign have recently introduced a new the Novena for Mental Health. If you’re wondering how to get started, you’re in the right place!

October 10, recognized globally as World Mental Health Day, is the day to begin this Novena. The World Foundation of Mental Health has aptly marked 2023 with the theme, “Mental health is a universal human right.” This Novena echoes that sentiment, advocating that all suffering souls deserve compassion, understanding, and support.

The Novena is structured on a “Pray, Learn, Act” foundation, focusing on nine themes connected to mental health. Each day presents a chance to dive deeper into these themes, understanding the myriad ways people experience mental health challenges.

The Church emphasizes, “You are the treasure of the Church. The Church lives to serve you,” read the statement by the USCCB. It’s a powerful reminder that you’re never alone in your struggles. Archbishop Borys Gudziak said it best: “Nobody and nothing can alter or diminish your God-given dignity.”

Various resources, both religious and secular, accompany the Novena on the USCCB’s website.

Consider this Novena an invitation—a call to grow spiritually, to deepen your understanding, and to extend your hand to those in need. Join in, because now, more than ever, every prayer and every act of kindness counts! Always remember: mental health is everyone’s right.

Pray for mental health!

🙏
