In a prime-time television appearance on Italy’s widely-viewed talk show “Che Tempo Che Fa,” Pope Francis shared his unique perspective on several critical issues, including his hope for an empty hell.

During the January 14, 2024 broadcast, he addressed the existence of hell, a concept firmly established in Catholic doctrine, Pope Francis presented a thought-provoking viewpoint.

“I like to think of hell as empty; I hope it is,” he said, clarifying that this belief is a personal one rather than an official dogma of the Catholic faith. This perspective aligns with theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar’s concept of an empty hell and reflects a compassionate approach to Catholic theology.

Pope Francis’ reflections come amidst previous Vatican clarifications on his stance regarding hell. Notably, in a past private conversation with the late Eugenio Scalfari, he had hinted at the possibility of an empty hell, leading to official denials from the Vatican.

During the interview, the 87-year-old pontiff also commented on the phrase from the traditional Act of Contrition, “because I have sinned, I have deserved your punishments,” describing it as overly harsh.

Moreover, Pope Francis addressed other significant topics, including the Vatican’s stance on same-sex blessings, potential papal trips, and concerns about nuclear warfare. His humorous remark about being “still alive” and having no intention of retiring anytime soon lightened the atmosphere of the interview.

The interview, which lasted nearly an hour, marked the Pope’s second appearance on the show since his election in 2013, attracting a viewership of three million in Italy.

Pray with Pope Francis!
