In his message for the 57th World Day of Peace, Pope Francis has called for the creation of an international treaty to guide the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI).

Emphasizing the day’s theme of ‘Artificial Intelligence and Peace,’ the Pope expressed deep concern over the potential misuses of AI, warning against a future dominated by a “technological dictatorship.”

Pope Francis highlighted the ethical complexities surrounding AI, stressing its ambivalent nature. While recognizing the immense potential of AI in improving human life and fostering global fraternity, he also cautioned against the risks it poses to world peace, democracy, and human rights. The Pope said there is a need for responsible innovation that aligns with human dignity and the common good.

Addressing the dangers of AI in warfare, particularly the use of autonomous weapons, the Pope stressed, “These weapon systems can never be morally responsible subjects.” He also warned of the potential for AI to exacerbate inequalities, spread disinformation, and erode personal privacy.

The Pope’s message was not devoid of optimism, however. He acknowledged AI’s potential to revolutionize agriculture, education, and culture, and its role in promoting human development. “If artificial intelligence were used to promote integral human development, it could introduce important innovations,” he said.

In his call for regulation, Pope Francis emphasized that technological advancements should serve humanity’s highest aspirations, not compete with them. He advocated for inclusive and equitable AI development, ensuring that progress benefits all, particularly the most vulnerable.

Pope Francis’s message serves as a powerful reminder of the moral and ethical considerations of AI. Let’s pray for AI to be at the service of humanity!
