At St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Amarillo, Texas, Father Tony Neusch was pepper-sprayed during confession. According to a statement issued by the parish on Facebook, the assault occurred last Wednesday evening by an individual reportedly struggling with mental health issues.

Father Neusch, who did not seek medical treatment, reassured the community through the parish’s social media that he was unharmed. “I am okay and do not require medical attention,” he confirmed shortly after the incident.

Following the attack, the cathedral suspended its schedule for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. “We will suspend confessions, except by appointment, until security cameras can be installed in the chapel,” Father Neusch said.

Father Neusch emphasized the importance of safety, saying, “the safety of our confessors and those waiting to receive the Sacrament needs to be preserved.” He expressed his regrets about the disruption, saying, “I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The Amarillo Police Department is currently investigating the case. Details about the progress of their inquiry or the identity of the assailant have not been disclosed.
