A group of Democratic lawmakers have recently faced criticism for invoking their Catholic faith to justify their support for abortion rights.
In response, the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB) has issued a strong and clear response, condemning the lawmakers’ misrepresentation of Catholic teachings.
The USCCB expressed grave concern over the lawmakers’ assertion that Catholic principles of social justice, conscience and religious freedom support a woman’s right to choose abortion.
In their letter, the bishops firmly declared that intentionally ending innocent human life, especially in its most vulnerable stage, is fundamentally incompatible with the values of upholding human dignity and promoting well-being.
Referring to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the bishops emphasized that human life must be respected and protected from the moment of conception. They underscored that abortion not only violates the rights of unborn children but also inflicts immeasurable suffering upon countless women.
While acknowledging the importance of conscience, the bishops clarified that it cannot be misused to justify or support abortion. They emphasized the need for an informed conscience shaped by the Word of God, guided by the authoritative teachings of the Church, and grounded in scientific knowledge and reason.
The bishops also urged Congress to prioritize authentic support for the vulnerable and marginalized, including mothers and families in need. They called upon lawmakers to work towards the genuine common good by upholding the sanctity of life and respecting the dignity of every human being.
The USCCB’s response serves as a resolute reminder of the Catholic Church’s unwavering stance on the protection of human life and seeks to rectify the distortion of Catholic teachings by lawmakers who advocate for abortion rights.
Pray for life!
