Late last month, it was said Benedict XVI was “suffering very much because of the present situation of the Church.”

After meeting with leader of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, he said he now “keeps praying for Ukraine.”

Benedict XVI explained he follows the war closely, expressed his sorrow, and said he prays for peace to come.

Shevchuk said they spoke about the war and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, how Russia is comparable to the Nazi regime, and thanked him for letters he had sent.

He asked the retired pope to keep praying because “only the power of prayer keeps the Ukrainian people alive.”

Shevchuk and Benedict XVI have a strong history.

Shevchuk was ordained a bishop by Benedict XVI in 2009, and his election as leader of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was also confirmed by him.

🙏 Pray with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI for peace!
