I am a convert. I used to be a baptist. I was taught as a baptist that Jesus took on the punishment of ALL sin when he was chastised and died on the cross. Why do the Catholics not teach this?
The Catholic Church does teach that Jesus took on the punishment of ALL sin .
But we must also repent and be sorrowful of our sin, and ask God for mercy in order to receive it. God knows each person’s heart. Therefore, God forgives when he knows that we are truly sorry for our sins. As part of that forgiveness, God also counts on us to do all that we can to repair the damage that our sins have caused, because sin does just hurt the person who committed it and their relationship with God, but also others who are part of the Body of Christ. We must also strive to not sin anymore with his help. We shouldn’t just do whatever because Jesus’ death was payment for all past, present, and future sins.
Jesus also tied the forgiveness of sins to faith and Baptism: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved” Mark 16:15-16.
I believe the example from Scripture is when David sinned with Bathsheba and had her husband killed. He (after being confronted by Nathan the prophet) repented and asked God for forgiveness. God forgave him, but his (temporal) penalty was that the child conceived in Bathsheba’s womb would die. (2 Samuel 11 & 12).
