In Super Bowl LVII, the game-winning kick was made by Harrison Butker, a devout Catholic who credited his teammates and God for his success.

After the score was tied at 35-35, Butker kicked a field goal in the final seconds of the game, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

During the game, many social media users noted that Butker appeared to be wearing a brown scapular around his neck. The scapular, a sacramental from the Carmelite tradition, is made up of two pieces of brown wool and is worn as a sign of consecration to Mary.

Butker’s teammates celebrated with him after the game-winning kick, but he was quick to credit his success to his team and God.

“The offensive line did a great job blocking. Great snap, great hold — and thankfully, that ball went through. All glory to God,” Butker said after the game according to Arrowhead Pride.

Butker’s game-winning kick looked great, despite having missed a field goal earlier in the game. In the first quarter, he failed to give the Chiefs an early lead after his 42-yard field goal attempt hit the left goal post. However, Butker remained focused and didn’t let the missed kick affect him.

“You’ve got to get that out of your mind and just focus on the process and the next opportunity that you get. But I felt like as the game went on, I was hitting a better ball, a better rotation, and yeah, glad that last kick went through.”

Butker’s game-winning kick at the Super Bowl was not his only clutch performance for the Chiefs. Just two weeks prior, he hit the game-winning field goal in the AFC Championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals, securing the Chiefs’ spot in the Super Bowl.

Butker, who is outspoken about his Catholic faith, has previously spoken about the importance of his faith in his life. In an interview with CNA in 2022, Butker discussed his love for the Traditional Latin Mass, which he believes can offer answers and happiness to young people searching for meaning in their lives.

“I felt like I wasn’t able to embrace [the faith] until I saw it completely exposed in the light. I knew that I had discovered authentic Catholicism. And I found that at the Traditional Latin Mass, in the traditional sacraments, and I think a lot of young people have found that as well.”
