Pope Francis and President Joe Biden had a significant 20-minute phone call this weekend, discussing the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza, along with the broader need for peace in the Middle East. The Pope was proactive in initiating the call, showcasing his deep concern and commitment to peace.

The two leaders delved into various topics, notably President Biden’s recent trip to Israel and the urgency to find a lasting peace solution in the Middle East. The President was explicit in his condemnation of the brutal attacks by Hamas against Israeli civilians, emphasizing the critical need to shield civilians in Gaza from the conflict.

Earlier in the day, Pope Francis had passionately appealed for peace in the Holy Land during the Angelus prayer, expressing his closeness to all those suffering in the region, including the hostages, wounded, victims, and their families.

President Biden also shared details of his efforts to ensure the timely delivery of food, medicine, and other crucial humanitarian assistance to alleviate the crisis in Gaza.

Both leaders agreed on the necessity to prevent further escalation and to work steadfastly toward establishing a durable peace in the Middle East.

This phone call marks another chapter in the ongoing dialogue between Pope Francis and President Biden, who have met in person several times, the last being in 2021.

Pray for peace!
