The recent devastating mass shootings in Lewiston, Maine, have elicited a heartfelt response from Pope Francis, expressing his deep sadness and offering prayers of strength and peace to the community.

The incidents, which unfolded at a local restaurant and bowling alley, claimed 18 lives and left 13 others injured.

In a heartfelt message conveyed through Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, Pope Francis shared his profound condolences and spiritual closeness to the bereaved families and the entire Lewiston community. The Pope, evidently moved by the gravity of the situation, referred to the incident as an “unspeakable tragedy,” emphasizing the magnitude of the community’s loss and grief.

Pope Francis, in his message, highlighted the importance of overcoming evil with good, as he invoked Almighty God’s blessings of strength and peace upon the people of Lewiston and the broader United States. He underscored the need for divine assistance in these trying times, praying for the swift recovery of the injured and for the medical personnel tirelessly working at their bedside.

The Pope also took a moment to commend the valiant efforts of the first responders, acknowledging their courage in putting their lives on the line to protect the community.

Bishop Robert Deeley of Portland echoed the Pope’s sentiments in his own statement, calling the incident “heartbreaking” and urging the community to pray for the affected families and the strength of the Lewiston community. He also asked for prayers for law enforcement and hospital personnel, recognizing their critical roles in responding to the tragedy.
