In a recent session of the Synod on Synodality, attendees brought forth the Church’s teachings on sexuality.

Paolo Ruffini, the synod’s communications commission president, conveyed that the theme of “mercy and truth” played a central role in the discussions.

The key question on the table was, “what concrete steps are needed to welcome those who feel excluded from the Church today because of their status or sexuality?”

According to Ruffini, there was a significant call for “greater discernment” regarding the Church’s teachings on sexuality. Yet, not everyone agreed. Some participants believed that current teachings were already clear and required no further examination. “How can we be welcoming for everyone, and, on the other hand, how can we remain faithful to truth?” Ruffini said,

The subject of LGBTQ inclusion was also front and center.

Ruffini noted that speeches concerning “sexual identity” were approached with “responsibility and comprehension,” and added, “we must reject every form of homophobia.” Many participants stressed the need for understanding the lived experiences of LGBTQ individuals while emphasizing adherence to the Church’s foundational teachings.

With Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich previously stating in August 2022 that the synod’s purpose is “not meant to change doctrine, but attitudes”, the ongoing debate leaves many wondering about the Church’s next steps. Findings from this assembly will be compiled into a summary, giving further clarity.

The Synod on Synodality remains a key focal point in the ongoing dialogue within the Catholic Church.
