Amid the legal debates surrounding the availability of mifepristone, U.S. bishops have initiated a call for nationwide prayer.

With the Supreme Court set to hear arguments on the drug, commonly used in early abortions, the focus is on its regulation and distribution. Archbishop Timothy Broglio and Bishop Michael Burbidge emphasize the “case has the potential to make a major impact in the widespread accessibility of chemical abortion.”

The bishops’ campaign, urging the faithful to pray for the “end of abortion and the protection of women and pre-born children,” coincides with significant dates in the Church. The prayer initiative starts on March 25, the anniversary of Pope St. John Paul II’s “Evangelium Vitae.” The bishops ask “Catholics to offer this prayer daily, from March 25 through June, when a decision is expected.”

Central to the bishops’ message is a critique of the FDA’s handling of mifepristone, claiming it has facilitated a “nationwide mail-order abortion industry.” They’re concerned that “the FDA has enabled… and turned neighborhood pharmacies into chemical abortion providers.”

As the Supreme Court deliberates, the outcome could significantly affect abortion practices in the U.S., the bishops conclude.

“When a Supreme Court decision is released, probably in June, we can expect a public and political reaction similar to the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.”

Pray for life!
